Calculator Methodology

We don't just generate numbers — every calculator uses a documented formula, checked against known reference values.

Our Approach

Every calculator on APluscalc is built on a standard, published formula rather than an approximation invented for the site. Where a formula has known limitations (like BMI), we say so directly on that calculator's page rather than presenting the result as a definitive verdict.

How We Test Each Calculator

Before publishing, we run each calculator against manually worked examples using the standard formula, and compare the output to known reference values (textbook examples, official worked examples from bodies like the IRS or WHO, or examples cross-checked against other established calculators). Example test cases for a few calculators:

  • BMI: 70kg at 1.75m → verified output 22.9 (formula: kg ÷ m²)
  • Compound Interest: $1,000 at 7% compounded annually for 30 years → verified output $7,612.26 (formula: A = P(1+r/n)^nt)
  • Mortgage: $280,000 loan at 6.5% for 30 years → verified monthly payment against the standard amortization formula

Formulas Used, by Category

Health

  • BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². WHO classification thresholds.
  • Calorie/TDEE: Mifflin-St Jeor BMR equation × activity multiplier.
  • Water Intake: ~30–35ml per kg body weight baseline, adjusted for activity and climate (National Academies of Sciences guidance).

Finance

  • Compound Interest: A = P(1 + r/n)^(nt)
  • Mortgage / Loan EMI: standard amortizing-loan payment formula, M = P × [r(1+r)^n] / [(1+r)^n − 1]
  • Simple Interest: I = P × R × T

Math & Science

  • Percentage: (part ÷ whole) × 100
  • Speed/Distance/Time: Speed = Distance ÷ Time
  • Temperature: standard Celsius/Fahrenheit/Kelvin/Rankine linear conversions

Education

  • GPA: Σ(grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ(credit hours), 4.0 scale

Data Sources & Assumptions

  • Tax Calculator: uses published federal tax bracket data for the stated tax year — see the "Last updated" date on that page and always confirm final figures with a tax professional or the official tax authority.
  • Currency Converter: uses a reference exchange-rate table that is periodically updated, not a real-time market feed. Rates are indicative — see our Disclaimer.
  • Rounding: monetary results are generally rounded to 2 decimal places; scientific/engineering calculators preserve more precision where relevant.

Limitations

All calculators are estimation tools based on general formulas. They cannot account for every individual circumstance — a mortgage calculator won't know your lender's specific fee schedule, and a BMI calculator won't know your muscle mass. Each calculator page includes a "Common Mistakes" or "Limitations" section describing the specific cases where the formula is less reliable.
